Monthly Archives: March 2008

At the end of this semester, I will get into these goals for Transient Spaces class.

  • Meet the deadline
  • Better understanding the structure of hypertext
  • Linking to wider bloggers’ world (especially for my research topic) i.e.making as many trackbacks as I can
  • Getting familiar with Blogging and Vlogging
  • Writing blog entries regularly
  • Experimental blogging (e.g. using all different media format for blogging)
  • Read others blog entries (this can be another research and it can make me to get more social network links)
  • Keep asking why and try to get answer through research process
  • Create my website that is an easy and simple but the contents are fully inside
  • LOVE MY BLOG

My topic is about the use of mobile phone for older people. Well, mobile phone is part of life now. If you don’t agree with this idea then you can check your pocket or bag. Is your mobile phone there? Yes, we always bring our mobile phones and even we are late for the appointment with someone, we can send text message or just call directly and say. “I’m sorry but I will be late.” How easy it is!When I was the first year of university in Korea (1998) , the mobile phone wasn’t popular, i mean not every one can buy it. It was expensive, huge and heavy to carry and also there weren’t any services for mobile phone compared with now.

How about now? I can’t expect we can take photos, listening music and even watching TV through mobile phone! I hardly see people who are watching TV through mobile phone in Melbourne but most people in Korea, they watch TV through their DMB (Digital Multimedia Broadcasting) phone in the bus, train, subway and EVERYWHERE!

Like this, the technologies are improved and new technologies are invented at every second. And we are living in this new technology world. However is really every one can adopt to these new technologies and is every one living happily in this technology world? I don’t think so.

Well, our life is getting better but we don’t consider ‘EVERY ONE’. They can be older people.

I was interested in this topic since 2006 and I am going to research more and deeper about this topic again for this year. I am still researching to get main concept of this research project. One thing that I want to achieve with this project is, I want to let older people can enrich their life with the new technologies like anyone in our society. Once again, New media is not only for New generation.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Primary Research

Advantages

  1. up to date
  2. specific to the purpose
  3. collects data which no other business or research centre have
  4. better control (because you can lead an answer that you want to get through the methodologies of Primary Research)
  5. confidential information than others so you can get information advantage
  6. in the case of using surveys then the cost might be cheaper
  7. a topic can be new and original so only few information exist
 Disadvantages
    1. difficult to get information
    2. take long time to research (depends on the topic)
    3. expensive to collect data because there are only few data
    4. may leading wrong direction or result from the research (if the sample isn’t enough or if you choose wrong methodologies for your research)

I could find few information about advantages and disadvantages of Primary Research however there are many sources of advantages and disadvantages of each methodologies of Primary Research. e.g. advantages and disadvantages of ’survey’
Thus I looked at each different methodologies of Primary Research then I found each methodologies advantages and disadvantages.
I will post about it later soon.
Also if you read about advantages and disadvantages of secondary research then you can get more senses about Primary Research because you can compare between Primary research and Secondary research.

I will post this entry that I’ve done the research about Primary Research so far.

    What is Primary Research?

  1. information you collect on your own
  2. collecting data about a given subject directly from the real world
  3. any type of research that you go out and collect yourself
  4. getting original data directly about the product and market
  5. primary data is data that did not exist
  6. the research is original (different from secondary research : I will explain more about secondary research later)
  7. it involves firsthand observation and study by a researcher

  8. “Primary research is the study of a subject through firsthand observation and intestigation, such as analyzing a literary or historical text, conducting a survey, or carrying out a laboratory experiment. Primary sources include statistical daya, historical documents, and works of literature and art.” (quotation from in the MLA Handbook (4th ed.), Joseph Gibaldi (1995) p.2)

I did research about Primary Research with all different sources that are books, journal and online articles. Actually I have a problem about this topic is Primary Research. What is my problem so far?

  9. can’t find many sources only for ‘Primary Research’
  10. many books and other sources don’t explain or specify about ‘Primary Research’ only
  11. start to researching the sources that are related to the ‘Primary Research’ so there are so much works to be done
  12. definitions of research and the methodologies can be different with all different area e.g.communication research, science research. etc
  13. even a book that is called ‘Dictionary of Mass communication and Media Research’ doesn’t mention about what is ‘Primary Research’ at all
  14. primary research #2 Jpg

  15. this research can be very easy or very difficult
  16. These are all the problems that I’ve got during the research about my group’s topic is ‘Primary Research’ and I think I can get more senses to resolve these problems as time goes by.

I keep thinking about my research project,

    • How can I start?
    • What can be the first step?
    • Can I finish this research?
    • How can I finish this research?
    • Can I reach to my goal at the end of the semester?
    • Can I get the answers from my research?
    • How can I resolve the problems during the research?
    • What’s the most important purpose of this research?
    • I’ve got many questions about my research and I think these questions and expected risks will help me all the time. (:

Our group is researching about ‘Primary Research’ and my part is ‘advantages and disadvantages’ of primary research. I’ve googled about primary research last week and I found very basic and short definition about it.

Primary research (also called field research) involves the collection of data that does not already exist.

    this definition is from wikipedia

    So the Primary research is

  17. a research that the writer himself (or herself) conducts.
  18. not every topic lends itself to primary research
  19. And I will focus on the ADVANTAGES and DISADVANTAGES of primary research.

I’ve read some books that I brought from Korea. Actually I have some problems from the beginning because I couldn’t find many books that are related to my research project both in Korea and Australia and even online. As I mentioned before I think this is ‘developing’ idea in media industries and people are still researching about this idea. I found some mobile phone technologies for the older people (that we called smart phone) but I couldn’t find enough theoretical idea for this topic. Thus I just made the things to do list for the first step of my research project.

  20. find books as many as I can
  21. find articles or even people’s opinions about the topic both in offline and online
  22. do not focus on only one country, look at the FOREST!
  23. find expert or supervisor who knows the mobile phone industry or contents
  24. read newspaper (actually I can find good articles that are related to my topic because my topic is new so there will be updated everyday new theory or technologies about my topic
  25. think about the specific target of age and a region?
  26. for the survey, where can I put my survey questions?
  27. I have so many things to do for my research project because it is the first step of my research and I am still doing the brainstorming for making concept of my research. It is complicated and stressful but I think I will get into the right way soon.
