First Generation (1G)

  • The first generation mobile phone were developed in the 1980s

Second Generaion (2G)

  • GSM, CDMA,TDMA are the different protocols that brought the mobile phone into the second generation.
  • SMS (Short Message Service) is added for 2G mobile phones.
  • It is introduced to the market in early 1990s

Second and Half Generation (2.5G)

  • provided services such as WAP (Wireless Applicaiton Protocol)
  • GPRS (General Packet Radio Services)
  • Coloured screen with camera (not all phones)

Third Generation (3G)

  • a whole new network in 21st century
  • IMT-2000
  • UMTS
  • W-CDMA
  • high speed connection
  • internet access
  • video calls
